Cary Baker is a New York-based mixed media artist and designer. Over the past five years she has been developing a series of evolving land art installations, collectively titled Understories. Working from an original oil clay prototype, clusters of replicated figural sculptures are fabricated using mold-making and casting techniques. The figures are then wired for articulation and introduced into isolated rural environments and other improbable outdoor sites. Plant propagation and morphology, puppetry, choreography and living architecture and design are some of the many influences that have shaped her recent body of work, which uses allegorical tableaux to suggest a parallel universe where our ability to traverse and understand the natural world is amplified.
